Magnetic field line random walk and solar energetic particle path lengths

چکیده

Context. In 2020 May-June, six solar energetic ion events were observed by the Parker Solar Probe/IS?IS instrument suite at ?0.35 AU from Sun. From standard velocity-dispersion analysis, apparent path length is ?0.625 onset of each event. Aims. We develop a formalism for estimating random-walking magnetic field lines to explain why an event greatly exceeds radial distance Sun these events. Methods. developed analytical estimates average increase in lines, relative unperturbed mean field. Monte Carlo simulations line and particle trajectories model wind turbulence used validate study lengths guiding-center full-orbital trajectories. The was implemented global model, results are compared with inferred IS?IS observations. Results. Both simple estimate rigorous theoretical formulation obtained field-lines’ as function along large-scale simulated trajectories, we find that guiding centers can have somewhat shorter than length, while orbits substantially longer due their gyromotion nonzero effective pitch angle. Conclusions. long during be explained (1) random walk (2) transport about center angle scattering. Our computing accounting turbulent fluctuations, may useful application general.

Lengths and heights of random walk excursions

Consider a simple symmetric random walk on the line. The parts of the random walk between consecutive returns to the origin are called excursions. The heights and lengths of these excursions can be arranged in decreasing order. In this paper we give the exact and limiting distributions of these ranked quantities. These results are analogues of the corresponding results of Pitman and Yor [10, 11...

Random walk versus random line

Joël De Coninck, François Dunlop, Thierry Huillet Abstract: We consider random walks Xn in Z+, obeying a detailed balance condition, with a weak drift towards the origin when Xn ր ∞. We reconsider the equivalence in law between a random walk bridge and a 1+1 dimensional Solid-On-Solid bridge with a corresponding Hamiltonian. Phase diagrams are discussed in terms of recurrence versus wetting. A ...

Magnetic field models from energetic particle data at Neptune

The locations of features in the Voyager 2 energetic particle data from Neptune are combined with uncertainties n the multipole expansion f the planetary magnetic field to derive new magnetic field models that are consistent both with various interpretations of the particle features and with the magnetic field data. While assumptions as to the origin of the features must be made, they do not pr...

Path Collapse for an Inhomogeneous Random Walk

On an open interval we follow the paths of a Brownian motion which returns to a fixed point as soon as it reaches the boundary and restarts afresh indefinitely. We determine that two paths starting at different points either cannot collapse or they do so almost surely. The problem can be modelled as a spatially inhomogeneous random walk on a group and contrasts sharply with the higher dimension...
